Performing Your Own Work with Rosie Nicholls
Are you an actor who writes? Work on your monologues, comedy sketches or character pieces over two development sessions focussing on actors who want to perform their own work – and take part in the first New Actors Centre scratch night!
As actors we have the rare opportunity to bring another person’s work to life. Have you ever thought about doing this with your own ideas? Is there a type of character you haven’t had the opportunity to play? Or maybe you’ve got an idea for a comedy sketch but you’re not sure how to finish it? Maybe there are some monologues sitting in a drawer that you haven’t touched for a few years?
If so, this class is exactly for you – a supportive, creative environment to build your confidence as a writer/performer and develop your unique voice. It’s joyful and exciting to perform your own work!
In the class, we will workshop your piece on its feet in a group setting, led by actor and writer Rosie Nicholls – we will explore character creation, storytelling, narrative structure, and your unique narrative voice. Before session two, you have the opportunity to make changes, bringing back a revised script for further development – before presenting your piece in the inaugural scratch night that evening.
Your piece can be a theatre monologue, a comedy character or a clown scene – but it must be for live performance (no screenplays) and no more than 10 minutes in length. You must be the intended performer and it must be your own writing. Your piece can be brand new, or something you have been working on for a while!
The class will involve dramaturgical work such as feedback, character development and, potentially, rewrites – so please be open to undertaking this work with your piece.
This class involves two sessions – please take a note of the dates and allow time to work on your piece between sessions!
Rosie Nicholls is an actor, writer and performer with Grubby Little Mitts (Amused Moose Award Winners 2022). Rosie recently directed the forthcoming comedy web series Open To Work, produced The Mayor and His Daughter (Chortle #3 Best Shows of 2025) and is an original cast member of youtube’s No Rolls Barred.
